The Brief
Rosenberg wanted to turn an ageing institutional building into a world-class IB school — one that could hold its own against international benchmarks while staying genuinely rooted in its Indian context. The starting point was the existing Posnett Bhavan: a structurally complex, thoroughly utilitarian building with none of the polish an international school brief usually assumes. There was no clean slate here — only what already stood, and the challenge of making it feel both premium and proudly local.
The Design Response
We chose brick as the primary language of the new facade — a material with deep roots in Indian building tradition — paired with generous floor-to-ceiling glazing that pulls daylight deep into every classroom. Projecting brick jaali screens run across the elevation, filtering harsh sunlight into shifting patterns of shade that move through the classrooms over the course of a day. Planter boxes are built into the facade at every level, softening the building’s mass with real greenery rather than applied decoration, and a lightweight entrance canopy creates the kind of generous, welcoming threshold a school deserves. The result reads as contemporary and premium, without ever losing its Indian identity.

The Impact
For the students who’ll fill these classrooms, the building offers light-filled, naturally ventilated spaces and green terraces that feel nothing like the fluorescent-lit institutions this typology usually produces. For Rosenberg, the transformation of a neglected building into a landmark campus does real work for the brand — signalling ambition and quality in a competitive school market, while adaptive reuse keeps construction cost and timeline well below a new-build campus.
Built to Last
Reusing an existing structure avoids the embodied carbon of demolition and new construction altogether. The brick jaali reduces cooling loads passively, the planters improve air quality across the campus microclimate, and the generous glazing cuts down on artificial lighting through the school day.
