A school that starts as one block and a handful of classrooms eventually runs out of room for its own ambition. Bibipet School had reached exactly that point — and needed to grow without losing what made it work in the first place.

The Brief
The brief was to grow a single-block primary school into a complete campus — one that could serve students across all grades, while staying cohesive, joyful, and appropriate to its semi-rural Telangana setting. The plan had to knit new blocks into an existing, still-operating school without disrupting a single school day, all while staying economical enough to build in a community school context.
The Design Response
We planned the campus as a series of low-rise blocks arranged around a generous central courtyard — a strategy rooted in the traditional Indian school typology of verandah-linked classrooms opening onto shared outdoor space. A bold terracotta red and white palette gives the whole campus a strong, memorable identity that’s simple and affordable to build. Covered colonnaded walkways connect every block, sheltering students from sun and rain while doubling as informal spaces for play and conversation between classes. A louvred screen block anchors the central axis, framing the courtyard and offering a shaded gathering point for the whole school. Even the gate and boundary wall were designed into the same architectural language, so the finished campus reads as one coherent place rather than a school with additions bolted on. Mature trees already on site were retained wherever possible, keeping the campus cool and connected to its own landscape.

The Impact
For the children who study here, it means a large, safe courtyard for play and assembly, shaded walkways that work in any weather, and classrooms designed to stay naturally cool and bright. For the school itself, the coherent new identity gives students and staff real pride in the place, and the phased construction approach let the expansion happen without disrupting a single term — while significantly increasing capacity so students no longer need to leave town for secondary grades.
Built to Last
The courtyard plan drives natural cross-ventilation through every block, cutting the need for mechanical cooling in a hot climate. Covered colonnades shade walkways and facades alike, existing trees were preserved rather than cleared, and the terracotta-and-plaster palette is both locally available and easy to maintain for years to come.
